Counseling

When most people use the word “counseling”, they often think of a therapist sitting in a room with a nice couch and lots of books. In fact, there are plenty of types of counseling and a counselor to offer advice in all sorts of subjects. If you’re considering a career as a counselor, or if you’re looking for help with some aspect of your life, know that there is likely a counselor for every issue that troubles you. What follows are some of the more popular types of counseling.

1. Marriage counseling

Marriage counseling is a great way to work through problems or issues, or to build a stronger marriage. A marriage counselor is trained in how to sort through problems in an effective, intelligent way. Moreover, a marriage counselor knows how to incorporate multiple perspectives in a marriage so as to keep it strong and lasting.

2. Financial counseling

A financial counselor knows how to plan proper spending so that the client does not overspend or go beyond his or her means. Additionally, a financial counselor knows how much money and what resources should be set aside for the future, and which can be spent at that time. Moreover, a financial counselor should be able to advise the client exactly how resources should be invested and it what sources so as to provide maximum benefit for the client.

3. Emotional/psychological counseling

This type of counselor is the most commonly cited type. These counselors can provide advice in working out life problems or structuring and building life skills. Additionally, they can help the client to work through issues such as depression or other disorders, or work to build more healthy relationships. In short, these counselors offer all sorts of services to improve the quality of one’s health and mental well-being.

4. Legal counseling

A legal counselor is more often called a “counsel”. A legal counselor will offer advice on how to handle one’s legal affairs. This can range from arranging legal documents such as wills, deeds, or power of attorney documents. In addition, a legal counselor can advise on court maters such as whether or not to press charges in case of an incident, what to do in case of brought charges, or how to proceed in a courtroom situation. Certain legal counselors are attorneys and so are able to defend one in a court of law in addition to advice.

5. Career/life counseling

This type of counselor is most often seen in schools where the advice most often relates to what career choices or paths to take. In addition, there are life counselors who can be hired to motivate or train people to take a new direction in life. Sometimes this will be in the form of motivational speech, or a person who will evaluate the client’s life carefully to understand what parts can be improved upon to achieve the client’s desired ends, whether it be a better relationship, a different job, or a more successful (defined loosely), happy position in society.
